The Hot Mess Line
When this isn’t the right call
Some things need more than ten minutes and a Spotter. We want that edge to be boringly clear.
If you are in immediate danger, thinking about harming yourself or somebody else, or need urgent medical or mental-health support, Hot Mess is not the right line.
In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Elsewhere, use the appropriate local emergency or crisis service.
Hot Mess is one person on the phone with another, for about ten minutes, during an ordinary stuck moment: the nerves, the avoidance, the spiral after the set, the decision you keep walking around, the thing you cannot seem to start.
It does not diagnose. It does not provide therapy, medical care, or emergency response.
What a Spotter does at the edge
If a call stops being a Hot Mess call, a Spotter does not improvise outside the lane. Spotters are trained to say so plainly, use the handoff resources they are given, and help the caller connect with the appropriate service when that is reasonably possible.
What we keep
Calls will not be recorded. We may keep a brief operational or training note without the caller’s name. We do not publish call content, sell it, or use callers as marketing material.
