The Hot Mess Line

Who picks up?

Two rough line-drawn hands held up beneath an imaginary falling object

A spotter is the person standing under you while you learn the trick. Hands up. Watching. Close enough to catch you, not close enough to do it for you.

THE KIND OF CALL WE’RE BUILDING FOR

I go on in twelve minutes and I can’t feel my hands.

Spotter: Okay. Forget the whole show. What do the first thirty seconds look like?

That’s what we mean by a Spotter: somebody who can stay useful for ten minutes while you’re temporarily not very useful to yourself.

At first, it will be a small bench: performers, teachers, mentors, artists, stage people, retired professionals, and exceptionally useful humans. Everyone learns the same basic operating boundaries before answering.

Might you be useful?

A teacher. A performer. A mentor. A retired professional. The person everybody already calls six minutes before something important. The very competent weird aunt.

We want a bench broad enough to cover show days, evenings, travel, odd hours and eventually multiple time zones. Tell us when you can actually answer. We will not promise hours the bench cannot hold.

Before the first shift, every Spotter gets orientation on the ten-minute container, privacy, boundaries, and what to do when a call stops being a Hot Mess call.

A person reads every application and writes back. Nothing you write here is published.

If you are the one who needs the call rather than the one making it, that is the front page.
